Nowhere could I find traces of my grandmother's explosive personality in these photos perhaps because she "behaved like a lady" in foreign territory. It certainly took courage for an elderly woman to secure passage on cargo ships and explore at each port-of-call with her female companion, because without a firm grasp of the language, culture and layout of the land, the voyager is placed in vulnerable situations. We rely on the kindness of strangers and our wits to navigate foreign territory. What we learn from these interactions often reveal more about ourselves than the incidental knowledge we may gain about other cultures.  I think constructivism is why so many of us are drawn (not to vacationing), but to travelling.
