Oh Dear! What can the matter be? Relief prints, assorted papers & thread, 84x82 cm
Having studied the tradition of women’s fretting for many years, I am constantly amazed at the skill, commitment, imagination and complex abstract thought involved in traditional and art quilts. I find the sophisticated play of vibrating colour combinations and intricate repeated patterns rivals and predates anything the Op artists of the 1960s produced. Indeed, quilt making has developed my heightened awareness of pattern as composition, while the secondary designs created by repetition creates a wonderful new illusion of movement to my work. Metaphorically and physically, line is structure, since the contours of thread literally holds the layers of imagery and material together.
