A small light may flicker on in the pantry, while something may drop or roll onto the nursery floor. A creaky board may be heard from the kitchen, while a shadow may appear in a bedroom, and a drape flap in a drawing room. The intention is to provide a safe space to startle people, because when the fight-or-flight response is triggered, we experience a flood of adrenaline, endorphins, and dopamine most of us enjoy. Moreover, when we are scared, these chemicals help us record more layered and rich memories of the experience.
